Scammed Again, Because I Was Not Paying Attention November 2, 2015 11:06

On October 31, I received a convo through my culturalpatina.etsy.com gallery from a fellow calling himself Randy Morgan. He inquired as to weather one of my Ron Stewart paintings was still available. If it were, he asked me for my best sales price. I responded in the affirmative with my best price and waited with baited breath for the response.

He responded almost immediately, telling me thanks and that he wanted to purchase the piece for his dad. He told me he was on an oceanographer on a trip to France and that he wanted to pay for the item via pay pal. He spent some time telling me how his pay pal account was connected to his personal bank account and that he needed my pay pal email address so that he could deposit the money into my pay pal account. He further noted that when the money was deposited into my account he would send his shipping agent around to collect the painting.

I responded again with my final price, but without the shipping and insurance costs, since his agent was going to pick the item up. Once I did this he responded almost immediately telling me that his agent needed $450.00 before he would pick the piece up and that since he was at sea, this was difficult for him to take care and asked me if I could contact the agent at pickupdelivery_msc@yahoo.com. At this point, I began to get suspicious as he also wanted me to take care of this by transferring the $450.00 via a Western Union Money Gram, and that he would pay me back when he deposited the painting price+shipping costs into my pay pal account.

I responded to let him know that this was becoming more complicated than it was worth and that I would pay the shipping and insurance cost for him and that all he needed to do was deposit the money for the painting into my pay pal account.

I waited and waited for his response, but nothing came. At this point I called pay pal to let them know what was going on and they told me that this was a scam which they had seen many times before.

Since I wanted to finish the game, I sent my final email to Randy, letting him know that his IP address had been captured and that it had been turned over to the FBI who were now tracking it back to his location. I also mentioned that he needed to continuously look over his shoulder because they were coming to get his ass. The message bounced back immediately, telling me the email address was no longer in service.

Key issues to be aware of. 1. Be concerned when someone asks you to consider the convo outside of your store platform. 2. Be concerned when the message is poorly written, 3. Be really, concerned when someone wants you to transfer money with a Western Union Money Gram, and 4. Be really, really, concerned when a potential buyer goes to great lengths explaining who he is and why he is doing what he is doing, and finally 5. Be really, really, really, concerned when someone tells you that they have their own agent standing by to pick up the item purchased. There are probably more warning lights that could be noted, but I think these are the most important. Hope this information helps some of you out there that might be exposed to a similar scam in the future.

Culturalpatina Official Open House October 19, 2015 11:55

Culturalpatina's had the official open house yesterday from 12-5. The work of over 40 artists in my collections were on display, with a focus on western art, southwestern prehistoric and historic pottery, Navajo rugs, bronze sculptures, Naga adornments and textiles. Throughout the day, we had over 40 visitors with a wide range of art interests.

The open house was held to thank all of those who supported culturalpatina's development, and to dedicate my art collection to my Mothers memory. She loved art as I do and without her financial support the gallery would not have happened.

I have posted a representative sample of snaps taken before and during the event. I thought I would be able to make a short video, but did not have the time given the number of questions and tutorials given during the course of the event.

Now we have to get back to work, and get this new order out to a client in Hong Kong who just purchased one of my historic Kuwaiti camel saddle bags. I am open Monday-Saturday from 9-5, and all of my items are listed on the culturalpatina web site. If you see something you like, please give me a call at 703-503-8019 or email me at dlbent@aol.com. All sales are conducted via the internet only.

While I was hard at work, getting ready for this coming Sunday's gallery open house, some very dear friends stopped by for a visit. Several snaps of my wife Linda, Dennis, Kelley and his wife Cheryl in the gallery and one of me with Dennis and Cheryl, while Felix, my pet Idaho mountain lion stands guard. The last one is of Dennis and Cheryl in the Central and South American pottery section of the gallery.

Additional Update on the Use of Culturalpatina Art in New Times Square Resturant October 7, 2015 16:52

Several weeks back, I reported that several of Culturalpatina's historic South American pieces of pottery were acquired by a NY design firm for use in a new restaurant in Times Square. I can now report that the design firm was Home Studios (hOmE) ( homestudios.nyc) and the restaurant was the Dos Caminos which is the firms flagship unit in Times Square. Details follow: Times Square: Earlier this month, BR Guest opened a 250 seat version of Mexican crowd-pleaser Dos Caminos in the W Hotel. The new restaurant takes over the old Whiskey Bar space and part of Blue Fin.  (That restaurant, by the way, is undergoing a revamp right now, but it's going to reopen next month.)  The new Dos Caminos was designed by HoMe, the hip Brooklyn-based studio that also created the dining rooms at Paulie Gee'sRebelle, and Ramona, among others. Ivy Stark's menu includes small plates and lighter dishes that have never been served at the Dos Caminos restaurants before. Stark also plans to grind her own nixtamal and make fresh tortillas in the restaurant. Status: Certified open; 1567 Broadway, 212-918-1330. https://www.facebook.com/Doscaminosrestaurants/photos_stream

This was quite an unusual project for hOmE due to the size-they normally do not work on large commercial projects. It was a real privledge to support hOmE by providing the items from culturalpatina and we believe it is a great testimonial about the quality and uniquness of our art forms. Additional infor can be found on hOmE as follows.

"hOmE IS A CREATIVE STUDIO FOUNDED BY BROTHERS EVAN AND OLIVER HASLEGRAVE IN GREENPOINT IN 2009. KNOWN FOR THEIR ATTENTION TO DETAIL, CRAFTSMANSHIP, AND CONTINUAL INNOVATION, hOmE HAS GAINED INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION AND AWARDS FOR THEIR DESIGN OF HOSPITALITY INTERIORS

New Ron Stewart Monumental Oil Paintings Added the Culturalpatina Collection October 3, 2015 13:45

Three new Ron Stewart Monumental Oil Paintings have been added to the Culturalpatina collection. According to Ron's wife Sharon:  "Ron has done a lot of larger paintings. Sometimes they are commissions, or galleries request a large piece for their bigger walls, and sometimes he just feels like a challenged! He has done 4 ft by 10 ft, stagecoach paintings, and 6 ft by 4 ft commissions, and 3 ft X 8 ft, and he has done a 40 ft X 60 ft for a Scottsdale Ins. Co. Many, Many through the years. (In fact we have a 40 ft X 60 ft painting of a stagecoach with the Superstitions in the background, and a flock of quail in the fore ground. It hangs in Ron's studio on a very large wall with skins and artifacts around it. (It's awesome I think, but I'm prejudice!)"

These are extraordinary paintings and Ron has provided an insiders view of how he created them. These are titled: "Phoenix Bound", "In Morning Glow" and "Canyon Escape". Check them out and let me know what you think. They will be on display at the up coming culturalpatina Gallery open house on Oct 18th, which is right around the corner.

New Bill Lundquist Art Just Posted August 29, 2015 16:30

Just wanted to let all of our followers know that I have just posted two new pieces of Bill Lundquist's art. These are items 890, "Apache Maiden-Sunrise Dance", and 891, "Dances with Wolves-Sioux Warrior". I hope you enjoy these as much as you have Bill's last piece entitled "Ribbon Shawl".

Continuing Changes at the Culturalpatina Gallery August 28, 2015 13:26

One of the most difficult things to do in creating my "End of Life Project-Culturalpatina" is to let go of some very important parts of me as I move forward on this new path.

This includes things like my Moose and Elk mounts. The mounts have both been donated to the local Moose and Elk Lodges.

Harvey the moose just left for his new Moose Lodge home today. It saddens me that he is gone, but delights me that it has found a good home where he will be appreciated for years to come. The snaps are attached.

The first one is of Moose Members Mark Smith, Administrator of Centerville Moose Lodge #2168 and his District Governor, Bill Stollhans. The second snap is of me (the good looking one on the left) making the transfer to the District Governor, and the final snap is Harvey being strapped in for the ride to his new home. The Elk mount will be on its way to the local Elk's Lodge tomorrow

Gallery Update July 30, 2015 18:15

This has now been settled and we should be complete with all of the major contractor work in the next two weeks. Then the work begins of hanging all the art, and arranging the gallery to best show off the works at hand. The dust is finally subsiding and I will be very glad when all of this work is completed.

The gallery is well on its way now. The painters are here and there are piles and heaps of my treasures all around me. I cannot move for fear of breaking them. I sure cannot wait until all this improvement and expansion are over.

"What advise would you give a new collector of cultural art?" June 28, 2015 10:58

I recently responded to a potential buyer who asked the question, "What advise would you give a new collector of cultural art?" I responded with the following, since others who visit my site for the first time, might also want to ask this question.

Dear New Time Collector:

Nice to meet you and thanks for checking out my shop. Good question. I will give you the same suggestions I give to everyone, and the same advise that was given to me almost 50 years ago when I asked the same question.

The most important thing to consider, is whether or not you like it.

Second might be if it seems to reach out and grab you, when this happens you will know what I mean, and

Third might be, if it speaks to you.

How much you can resell it for is the last thing to consider, because in the long run, it is only worth what someone else will pay for it.

You should also buy the very best that you can afford, this will increase the chances of getting your money back, in the event you would like to sell it in the future or trade it up for something better. Provenance is also important to consider on higher priced pieces. The story behind the piece and who owned it before you can increase the resale value as well.

Seeking advice is also important. In my store, all of my items have some background and history if I can find it, so you know what you are getting. If you are in doubt, ask for advice.

There are no stupid questions. Part of what I enjoy most about this "End of Life Project" of putting Culturalpatina together is to help folks understand what these art forms are really about.

I am interested in selling the items, but most importantly is to find the items a good home so that you become part of the story as it continues its journey to the next individual who might be taken by it.

Please let me know if you see anything of interest when you are ready. If you want to chat about it, please feel free to call me at 703-503-8019 or email me at dlbent@aol.com. Thanks again for checking in and hope you have a nice weekend.
Warmest
Dennis

Lincoln Fox's "Tree of Life" Bronze Sculpture June 27, 2015 17:56

This is a very famous piece of sculpture and the story behind its creation will move most if not all who read it. Stay tuned.

Update on Culturalpatina April 28, 2015 14:46

We are currently putting all of the pieces in their respective collections. Please have patience, as this is taking a good deal of time. We hope to have all the collections in order over the next week or so.
