Some additional information on provenance. It is a bit unusual and rather rare for it to be intact with no re-painting. This comes from our consignor who acquired a large portion of the collection of Dr. John Hilsabeck from his estate after his passing. Dr. Hilsabeck was a preeminent surgeon in Orange County for over 50 years. Our consignor was informed by Dr. Hilsabeck's daughters that most of his Pre-Columbian and Southwestern US items were acquired in the 1960's and 70's during his time as president of the board of director's of the Bower's Museum in Santa Ana, at which time he acquired an interest in these items. He acquired many of the items that made up his collection from collectors and dealers who had loaned or sold items to the museum, who he had met during his time on the board. Items also were acquired at local Southern California auctions and art shows. Many of the items he did acquire were also exhibited in the museum between the 1960's and 80's, but unfortunately, our consignor could not acquire specific records on this, so we cannot identify which items and when they may have been exhibited.
